The Edison Technique

According to John C. Maxwell's The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader, when Thomas Edison had a new idea for an invention, he would make a public announcement before going to work on it in his lab. Once he'd made a commitment to the public, he had far more motivation to get to work on the invention.

This technique works wonders. It has seen a resurgence in popularity lately with social networking on the Internet. People will commit to doing something in a certain period of time by posting it on their blog or Facebook. Then they don't want to disappoint the community reading their posts, so they're more motivated to follow through.

Today being the 1st day of February, it would be prudent to mention The RPM Challenge, where musicians commit to producing an entire album in one month. I participated in this last year, and I must say, if I had made the commitment only with myself, I probably wouldn't have finished. However, having the support of a community behind me and knowing I'd made the commitment to the world at large gave me the extra drive I needed to follow through and finish my album.

This year I am incredibly busy with school, so I won't be participating in RPM, but I am participating in a new challenge. College Pro has selected me to start a painting franchise in Geneva, IL. So, this post serves as my public commitment. This blog as a whole will be an excellent resource for other students, painters, entrepenuers, or anyone interested in such topics. It's also a prong in my marketing strategy.

So, follow along this year and learn the ups and downs of running your own business, or simply get a fresh coat of paint on your house!
